Work Experience

Based on my work experience there are several areas that I have worked in which include publications and research, teaching, translation and localization work, and project management within academia and in Ed Tech. Publications/Research/Writing and Editorial Experience

My main research interests lie in the areas of dialectal contact, language attitudes, and perceptions. This means that I am interested in how people think about different dialects or accents and how this correlates to who the speakers of those dialects/accents are seen in the society at large. Over the years I have mostly worked with communities in the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo) and in San Juan, Puerto Rico, investigating attitudes towards Dominican and Puerto Rican Spanish by speakers of both groups. Of special interest to me is the status of Dominican Spanish in the Puerto Rican Diaspora.

   

       My publications examine perceptions of dialects of the Caribbean, by the speakers within and outside of that geographic and dialectal region. My research methods include largely sociolinguistic/ethnographic interviews based on questionnaires, data coding, data analysis (qualitative a quantitative). The studies examine and draw from phonetic/phonological, semantic and syntactic differences between language varieties. In these projects I have worked on my own as well as in collaboration with colleagues. The volume entitled "Topics in Spanish Linguistic Perceptions" and the special edited volume from Caribbean Studies ("The Dominican Diaspora: From Quisqueya to Puerto Rico and beyond") are two co-edited volumes of mine with current research in the field. Teaching and Curriculum Development

My teaching experience spans close to two decades. I have taught in language schools (e.g., Inlingua) to students from the business sector. I then moved into teaching in Higher Education by first teaching as a graduate student and then in a faculty position. I have taught English, German, and Spanish at all learning levels. During my time at Shepherd University (2009-2021) I taught culture (Latin America & Spain), linguistics classes, and conversation classes. I addition I had about 15 independent studies with our students focusing on anything from Frida Kahlo to the impact of the Hispanic vote on US elections. 

Most of the courses I designed myself, created learning and testing materials. Together with my colleagues we established learning goals based on ACTFL guidelines and tested our students' assessment regularly (for more information see section on Projects in Academia).

Getting things done: Projects in Ed Tech and Academia

My time in the Education Technology sector has given me the opportunity to contribute and also head several projects:

SPEAK - Proofreading and Translator

  • Translating, editing, and localizing in-app general and business learning content (English to German) following company language and content guidelines at the Novice and Intermediate learning levels (CEFR levels A1-B1)

  • QA testing of subtitles on different platforms and testing environments (e.g., Lokalize and in-App)

Babbel - Content Creator for German

  • Creating new learning content (grammar and vocabulary presentations, exercises and more) for live language courses (CEFR level A1- C1)

  • Enhancing and editing of exiting content (all learning levels)

  • Editing AI translations (GERM> ENG/SPAN, ENG > GERM/SPAN, SPAN> ENG/GERM, FRENCH > ENG/GERM/SPAN)

  • Creation of new learning content for tailored B2B English courses 

EF - Content Creator German

  • Authoring of new course content

  •  Revising the existing CEFR syllabus for all levels A1-B2 to adapt to more level-appropriate learning goalsRestructuring learning content by

  • Editing and adapting existing learning materials such as exercise activities, audio and video scripts, and reading exercises to the learning outcomes established for the learning levels A1- B2

  • Scripting speaking exercises appropriate for each level of learning

  • Creating brief learning evaluations for levels A1- B2

As as a faculty member at Shepherd University I had the opportunity to head several projects:

  • Chair of the Faculty Research Forum - invitation of speakers, and heading the organization of the events)

  • Coordinator for language assessment for Modern Languages - including communicating with assessment hosts (Avant Assessments), organizing testing of up to 15 sections, collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data

  • Chapter Advisor Spanish Honors Society Sigma Delta Pi

  • Coordinator for Placement Test of Spanish - communication with students and organization of testing

  • Coordinator or Spanish Majors and Minors, Department of English and Modern Languages - point person for questions concerning studies in our programs
